“Our education system expects students to be finished learning how to read and be able to use those skills to read to learn by the end of 3rd grade. Studies show that 74% of 3rd graders who read poorly still struggle in ninth grade.”
Our academic focuses will be on increasing reading skills for students. We have partnered with Literacy Mid-South to challenge students to read 1400 minutes with our iREAD Program. iREAD creates an opportunity for continued growth and sustained achievement to prevent summer learning loss. Without access to enrichment, both academic and otherwise, less affluent students can lose as much as three months of reading comprehension skills over the summer. This can leave students behind by as much as three grade levels by the end of fifth grade. Utilizing the summer to address this gap, advances the march to grade-level reading.
Summer on the Levee would like to offer incentives for students to achieve the required 1400 minutes of reading. Each time they meet a goal, students will be rewarded with a gift card/coupon from a local restaurant or business in the area or other incentives like t-shirts, prizes, etc. Our goal is to provide 100 students with incentives at 6 different levels. We also need to purchase books for our students to read throughout the summer. To accomplish this, we are in need of donations to support our iRead program. A donation of $25.00 will provide a classroom set of books or 5 incentives for students. To help out our youth and support our efforts you can make a monetary donation through the paypal button on this page or send at check to HLCC (1801 N Houston Levee Rd, Cordova TN 38016). All donations are tax exempt.
